CYS Scholarship Audition for 2021/2022!

Saturday, June 12 at 10 a.m.

In-person audition at PBT Studios in the Strip District, 2900 Liberty Ave., 15201

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School invites children ages 5-9 to audition for the opportunity to receive a full scholarship for the 2021/2022 school year (classes begin in September 2021). PBT will award up to five full scholarships. Students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for scholarship funds (see below). Please note that to create as safe an environment as possible, caregivers are requested to remain outside of the building during the audition.

Register for the audition!

Who is the audition for? Children ages 5 to 9 years old. While no previous dance experience is necessary, students should have:
– Talent for training in ballet and other dance styles
– Desire, commitment and discipline to study dance in a training academy
– Ability to get to and from classes on a regular basis

How do I determine if my child is eligible/demonstrate financial need?
Income eligibility follows the Child Nutrition Programs: Income Eligibility Guidelines of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The 2021 guidelines can be found at this link. Parents are required to provide documentation to show proof of income eligibility. Click here for a list of acceptable documentation.

Where will the audition be held? In-person at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Studios, 2900 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Parking is available in a lot adjacent to the building and in a lot across from the building on Liberty Ave. Please note that caregivers are asked to remain outside of the building during the audition.

When should I arrive for the audition? Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and the audition begins promptly at 10 a.m. Check-in will take place at the student’s car or at the portico outside the building. Children will be escorted into the building by PBT staff. Unfortunately latecomers will not be admitted to the audition.

What will the audition be like? The audition is a basic dance class taught by experienced PBT staff and faculty members. Students do not need to prepare dances for the audition.

What should my student wear to the audition? Fitted clothing is best, such as a leotard and tights, or shorts / opaque leggings and a t-shirt. Socks or dance slippers are recommended (no shoes or bare feet). Hair should be pulled up and away from the face. Please note that children will not be able to change clothes/shoes inside the building. Please ensure they are dressed and ready upon arrival.

What are students allowed to bring into the building? Children are asked to bring nothing with them into the audition except for bottled water. Water fountains are not operating in the building.

How many students will receive a scholarship? We will award five full scholarships for the 2021/2022 school year.

When will we learn the results of the audition? Families will be notified two weeks after the audition. We will contact you whether or not your child receives a scholarship.

Make a Difference

Established in 2013 by PBT School and the PBT Education team, this annual program works to expose children to dance at an early age by providing need-based scholarships for young students with talent and drive. Scholarships focus on students from ages 5 to 9 – a pivotal stage to begin ballet training. PBT has awarded 61 scholarships to young dancers since the program’s inception.

This program is made possible by an endowment fund from the Ladies Hospital Aid Society, among others, and by many individual donors who value the power of dance to enrich the lives of children.
