Community Youth Scholarship Program
PBT created the Youth Scholarship program to make the company, school – and art of ballet – accessible to students and families throughout the greater Pittsburgh community.
Established in 2013 by PBT School and the PBT Education team, this annual program works to expose children to dance at an early age by providing need-based scholarships for young students with talent and drive. Scholarships focus on students from ages 5 to 8 – a pivotal stage to begin ballet training. PBT has awarded 51 full and partial scholarships to young dancers since the program’s inception.

Each year, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School auditions dancers between the ages of 5 to 8 to receive a full scholarship to study classical ballet during the school year.
Who is the audition for?
Children ages 5 – 8 years old. While no previous dance experience is necessary, students should have:
- talent for training in ballet and other dance styles
- desire, commitment, and discipline to study dance in a training academy
- ability to get to and from classes on a regular basis
How do I determine if my child is eligible?
Dancers must be eligible for the federal Free and Reduced Lunch program. The 2018 guidelines can be found at this link. Parents are required to provide 2018 tax statements or other documentation to show proof of income eligibility. Please see the registration form at the link above for additional acceptable documentation.
Where and when will the audition be held?
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Studios, 2900 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15201.
Check-in begins at 12:15 p.m.
Audition begins promptly at 1 p.m. Unfortunately latecomers will not be able to participate.
What will the audition be like?
The audition will be a basic dance class taught by PBT School faculty members of the Children’s and Student Divisions. Students do not need to prepare any dances for the audition.
What should my child wear to the audition?
Fitted clothing, such as a leotard and tights, or shorts / opaque leggings and a t-shirt. Socks or dance slippers are recommended (no shoes or bare feet). Hair should be pulled up and away from the face.
Will parents be allowed to watch the audition?
The audition is for students only. During the audition a “Get to Know PBT” information session will be held for parents and family. Light refreshments will be provided.
How many students will receive a scholarship?
We will award five full scholarships for the 2019 – 20 school year.
When will we learn the results of the audition?
Families will be notified two weeks after the audition. We will contact you whether your child receives a scholarship or not.
