Janet Popeleski, PBT School Principal, was a former principal dancer with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and has been teaching in the PBT School for more than thirty years. In addition to her duties as Principal and teaching and coaching students, she has staged many ballets for the school’s Annual Spring Performance and PreProfessional Showcases. Ms. Popeleski’s training began with the Hartford Ballet and continued on a full scholarship at the School of American Ballet. Upon graduation, she joined American Ballet Theatre, where she danced some soloist roles. She then embarked on an international career, becoming a principal dancer with the Iranian National Ballet, Teheran, Scapino Ballet – Amsterdam, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Zurich Ballet. While residing in Europe, Ms. Popeleski was Artistic Advisor to the Xanten Festival in Germany, where she coordinated a tour of Gala Evenings with international artists throughout Germany, Holland and Switzerland. She appeared in Gala Performances partnered by Rudolf Nureyev, Alexander Godunov, Jonas Kage, Vladimir Gelvan, and Miguel Campaneria. Ms. Popeleski’s repertoire includes full-length classical ballets, many Balanchine ballets and contemporary pieces which have enabled her to share a wide range of styles with her students.
