Resident Adviser - Byham House, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre
Basic Function
Oversee Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s residence and mentor students in their transition from traditional family living to dormitory living

Hours
On call 24 hours a day and six days a week
Contract Dates
June 7, 2010 to June 7, 2011
A summer only candidate will be considered but preference will be given to full-year candidates
Student Management (includes but not limited to)
- Ascertain arrival and departure time for students with regard to semester start and end, holidays, etc
- Meet parents as they arrive with students and be available for consultations with parents throughout the year.
- Provide orientation for new/returning students
- Convey specific expectations that include trust, cooperation, fairness, etc.
- Ensure parents have all contact information for the resident adviser
- Review student handbook with students; update as needed
- Review dorm rules with emphasis on curfew, sign in/sign out, and dorm cleanliness
- Advise students of rules and consequences for non-compliance.
- Advise students any rule infraction will be reported to the School Operations Director immediately and disciplinary action will be taken
- Provide dorm door codes to all students and change codes when a student ends their time of residence
- Alert students that dorm alarm will be set after hours
- Alert students that dorm searches are possible
- Advise students they must be reachable on their cell phones
- Meet with students regularly to maintain good rapport
- Conduct group meetings twice a month with students, or as needed
- Maintain 24 hour a day open-door policy
- Develop and monitor a chore schedule for students including:
- Kitchen clean up
- Taking out trash
- Bathroom detail when cleaning service is not available
- Overall tidiness
Residence Management
Equipment- Instruct students in the use of all appliances and report problems to School Operations Director
- Inspect dorms weekly with emphasis on cleanliness, equipment and furniture
- Schedule appliance and utility maintenance and meet service providers at the house
- Keep School Operations Director apprised of furniture condition as necessary
- Ensure furniture is being used correctly
- Make room assignments for new/returning students
- Receive information from School Operations Director on all new/returning dorm students
- Schedule cleaning, landscape, snow removal and food services
- Develop a check in/check out procedure for students that includes review
- Conduct safety inspections and conduct fire drills
- Supervise mail service
Other Responsibilities
- Meet with School Operations Director to review dorm activities
- Keep School Operations Director up to date on activities within the dorm, including student illness
- Develop list of substitute advisers in the event of illness, vacation, or emergency
- Ensure this list of substitutes is approved by the School Operations Director
Requirements
Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including customer service experience, the ability to mediate disputes and the ability to be organized amid a fast-paced work environment. Some course work in psychology or student affairs preferred. PBT also would consider a candidate with demonstrated life experience in these areas. Candidates will need a valid driver's license and preference will be given to candidates with a clean insurance record. Finalists will be subject to a background investigation and drug test. Any offer of employment is contingent upon a review of those results. When applying, the candidate will be asked to complete the paperwork for a Pennsylvania Child Abuse clearance. The successful candidate must physically be able to perform light house cleaning, snow removal and a physical inspection of all four floors.Compensation
Salary, dependent on experience, will include free housing and some meals. Benefit package included. The resident adviser will have three weekspaid vacation that must be taken while the students are not staying at the dorm. Vacation will be scheduled during school breaks that typically fall in June, August and at the conclusion of the Nutcracker run. If approved and the resident adviser takes vacation time outside the above dates, it is his or her responsibility to find a substitute dorm resident adviser. The substitute resident adviser must be approved by the School Operations Director. The resident adviser will pay the daily rate directly to the substitute. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre reserves the right to add or amend responsibilities after the start of the employment contract.
