The Dancers' Trust
Celebrated for their artistry and dedication to excellence, PBT’s dancers are an invaluable part of the region’s cultural landscape. While their work on stage may appear effortless, it requires a full-time commitment, beginning for most while in their early teens. This incredible focus and dedication leaves little opportunity for continuing education and outside employment.
By the age of 30, dancers are often approaching retirement at a time when most people are settled in an established career. At this time they must embark on a new career path, a major life change, especially if it arises suddenly due to a career-ending injury.
In 1993, in an effort to support PBT’s dancers transitioning into new careers, the dancers and friends of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre founded the Dancers’ Trust Fund. Upon retirement, any dancer who was a member of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre for at least three years is eligible for two $1500 scholarships to further their education, whether it is at a college, business school or through Pilates training.
Since its inception, the Dancers’ Trust Fund has provided more than $80,500 in tuition assistance, helping many dancers complete their educations and establish themselves in successful new careers.
Each year, the Dancers’ Trust and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre dancers present a benefit performance featuring a diverse repertoire including works created by the dancers themselves. Dancers and crew donate their time for the performance, and all proceeds go to the Dancers’ Trust Fund.
