Student Matinees

Student Matinees

Mainstage, full-length performances for students and teachers at discount ticket rates. These performances often include special events such as the intermission presentation, “A Look Behind the Curtain,” by Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr. The performances take place at 11:00 AM at the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh. A special preparatory program entitled In Step is available to schools who meet the attendance and distance parameters.

In Step

This up-close look at the training of aspiring ballet dancers provides a deeper understanding of ballet performance by examining ”tools of the trade” such as pointe shoes and costumes, elements of the theater and the athleticism of dancers.

Schools within 45 miles of downtown Pittsburgh that purchase 100 or more tickets to a student matinee performance have the opportunity to host a PBT School Faculty member and a pair of pre-professional students for a complimentary ”In Step” presentation. Other schools and organizations may book “In Step” for a fee of $150.

Instructional Material

Teacher’s Handbooks containing background information on the art of ballet and the upcoming production are distributed to schools attending the Student Matinees. The packet may also include an instructional CD, costume fabric samples, or other items that enhance understanding of ballet and generate excitement for the performance. Many of the activities in the handbooks are linked to other disciplines such as history, science, and language arts to create an interdisciplinary learning experience.
