Instructional Performances–“In Step with PBT”

“In Step with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre” is a series of performance-based programs that introduces students in grades Pre-K – adults to the art of ballet through presentation in the classroom, PBT Studios, and the Benedum Center.

In Step

This up-close look at the training of aspiring ballet dancers provides a deeper understanding of ballet performance by examining “tools of the trade” such as pointe shoes and costumes, elements of the theater and the athleticism of dancers.

Schools within 45 miles of downtown Pittsburgh that purchase 100 or more tickets to a student matinee performance have the opportunity to host a PBT School Faculty member and a pair of pre-professional students for a complimentary “In Step” presentation. Other schools and organizations may book “In Step” for a fee of $150.

Ballet FUNdamentals

Designed for children in Pre-K–Grade 3, this program takes place in your classroom and gives young children a chance to meet and talk with a dancer. An interactive presentation, Ballet FUNdamentals may involve a ballet-related story, a hands-on opportunity with ballet and pointe shoes, and firsthand experience with the five basic positions of the feet and arms, all resulting in a lot of FUN!

Discover Dance

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School faculty members host these events showcasing advanced students from PBT School’s Pre-Professional Training Program. Performance, conversation, and optional audience participation combine to demonstrate a dancer’s discipline and training, the language of ballet, and the relationship between dance and music that makes ballet such an exciting art. Through the use of costumes and appropriate repertoire, these programs are designed to fit the needs and resources of different facilities, age groups, and teaching objectives.

In 2008–2009, PBT is partnering with Gateway to the Arts for Discover Dance auditorium programs for Grades K-12. For additional information, contact Gateway to the Arts at 412-362-6982.

Preschool Discover Dance

Designed for 3–5 year olds, Preschool Discover Dance is modeled after the Discover Dance instructional performances. It is an interactive theater experience for students who may be too young to appreciate a full-length, mainstage performance. In a more casual atmosphere at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Studios, the program includes an age-appropriate performance interspersed with interactive instruction on choreography, costumes, shoes, and props. A creative movement component for the children is also included. Attendance requirements: 70-100 including students, teachers, and parent chaperones. This requirement may be met by combining several classes.
