Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Residencies in the Pittsburgh Public Schools provide movement experiences, ballet instruction, and workshops that create new experiences for students affecting how they view their world, giving dance a place of importance in their daily lives.
Creative Movement Residency Program: Partnering with two elementary schools in the City of Pittsburgh, Creative Movement provides movement classes for students in Grades 1 and 2 and creates attendance for Grade 3. A PBTS teacher, team-teaching with a classroom teacher, provides a nine-week movement experience for students reinforced by activities in the classroom. Creative Movement is now in its tenth year.
A "Congress for Children's Dance" will convene in the Spring of 2007 to begin plans for expansion of this program into Pre-School and beyond Grade 3.
CAPA Residency: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Pittsburgh's Creative and Performing Arts High School (CAPA) began a residency/partnership that involves all departments of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and provides opportunities for all CAPA students. PBT's artistic staff teaches ballet classes and choreography workshops at CAPA and in March 2006, launched the annual showcase of performances of new works by dancer/choreographers from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Company and invited artists.
Shadow Studies are offered throughout departments of PBT to all CAPA students. Roundtable discussions with PBT professionals, follow Student Matinee attendance.
This year, PBT Dancer Alan Obuzor will create a work on the CAPA dancers to be performed at the Student Matinee of the Choreographers' Showcase in January 2007.
The 2007 performance at the CAPA Theater on Friday, January 19 at 7:00 PM is titled "Dance Innovations". Tickets are available at the Box Office at Theater Square or by calling 412-456-6666.
Rogers CAPA Ballet Classes: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School teachers have been teaching ballet classes weekly at Rogers CAPA Middle School since 1996. This connection with PBT enriches and expands the ballet instruction they receive daily from the Rogers CAPA faculty.
